Repent
Repent: A Procedurally Generated Survival Horror
Hey there! Welcome to Repent—a game I made as a student project to explore procedural generation and horror mechanics. This is my first real dive into game development, so it’s definitely not perfect, but I’d love for you to check it out and let me know what you think!
How to Play
- Move with Click-and-Drag Controls: Click and drag in front of your character to step forward with your crutches. Be careful not to drag too far, or you’ll lose your balance!
- Turn with Right-Click: Right-click and drag to rotate your character.
- Collect Items: Step over the glowing items scattered around the map to pick them up.
- Repent at the Shrine: After collecting all items, head to the shrine to win.
- Pause Menu: Hit P for a pause menu with a quick how-to-play guide.
About the Game
You play as a PTSD war veteran who shot and killed their wife and them self. Trapped in purgatory, you are haunted by the ghost wife of your past. Armed with nothing but crutches (yes, crutches), you’ll need to navigate through a procedurally generated map to collect items and avoid the relentless ghost of your wife. The more items you grab, the harder she hunts you. Once you’ve found everything, head back to the shrine to repent for your sins and win the game.
The catch? Moving is hard. Like, really hard. Every step you take is a careful balance of moving your crutches just right to run away from the ghost of of your past wife.
Features
- Procedurally Generated Maps: Each run generates a new level, so no two playthroughs are the same. (Also, it took forever to get working, so please let me know if something weird spawns where it shouldn’t!)
- Unique Movement Mechanics: You control your character’s crutches by clicking and dragging. It’s tricky at first, but super satisfying once you get the hang of it.
- Psychological Horror Atmosphere: Creepy vibes, unsettling sound effects, and the constant fear of being caught keep you on edge.
- No Combat—Just Survival: There’s no fighting back here. It’s all about outsmarting the ghost and staying calm under pressure.
- High Stakes Gameplay: Every movement matters. Go too fast, make too much noise, or stumble, and you’ll pay for it.
Tips
- Master the movement. It feels weird at first, but once it clicks, it’s super satisfying.
- Lose or win at least once to see how the procedural generation works. It’s rough around the edges, but I’m proud of how it came together.
A Note from the Developer
I’m Nathan, a student at UF and a huge fan of games that mess with movement and mechanics. Repent is something I cooked up as a project to learn more about procedural generation and horror game design. It’s far from perfect (there’s only one level right now, and some items might spawn in weird spots), but I’d love for you to play it and give me some feedback!
- What works? What doesn’t?
- What would you like to see in future updates? More levels? More ghosts? Better mechanics?
I’m still figuring out game development, so any input you have would mean the world to me. Thanks for checking out Repent, and I hope you enjoy your time playing!
